Integrated Rural Management through holistic approach is a national commitment.The goal is to enrich the quality of life of the poor by meeting the basic need and generating employment opportunities on a wider scale through decentralized planning.The missio n of the State Institute of Rural Development is to facilitate rural development  vigorou sly through governmental and non-governmental intiatatives.  SIRD is the  states apex body for undertaking training, research,and action research and consultancy functions in the rural development sector.  It works as an   autonomous organization  supported by the Ministry of Rural Development , Government of India.

In Pursuit for Rural Empowerment
With the commitment to improve the livelihood of the Rural masses SIRD has initiated many Research activities. Apart from the usual fact finding and conceptualizing process it is also actively engaged in Action Research Projects. The Haryali Project under IWDP for Mabong-Sigeng Suldung Kamling West Sikkim is being worked out by SIRD with the Faculties being given Special responsibility each area. The Project cost is Rs 9.82 million sanctioned during CFY and the project is spread over 5 years. Besides Natural resource development and management through intensive afforastation SIRD is facilitating in improving their livelihood through poultry, piggery floriculture and bee keeping. This hamlets has been taken as the Social Laboratories of State Institute of Rural Development

Vision
The Director and the SIRD family has envisioned that by 2010 it would emerge as a premiere institute in the country and a national level resource centre on democratic decentralization, floriculture, medicinal plants, natural resource management, rural employment and sustainable development.NIRD, Hyderabad has sponsored 3 best performing SIRDs in the country for an international programme in Indonesia in 2005.SIRD Sikkim was one of the participants.
